MMC: False Prophets and Division!

Good Morning Everyone!

I hope that you had a nice relaxing weekend and was able to enjoy some of the cooler weather that we've had.  And I'm hoping that you are up and ready to go today and not dragging this Monday Morning.

Some quick announcements:
  • We are putting together a photo directory, you can either sign up for your picture to be taken after worship some Sunday or email Ellen Grunsell a picture.
  • Congregational Council is this Sunday after worship
  • The book of faith puzzler for the week is: How many times did Joshua and the rest of the Israelites walk around the city of Jericho before the walls came tumbling down?  If you know the answer (or look it up), email me with your answer by Wednesday at noon to be entered into our weekly drawing.
Now onto the text:

The first reading is Jeremiah 23:23-29Do you think of God as being far off or near by?  Jeremiah is warning of false prophets, how do you know which prophets to follow?

The second reading is Hebrews 11:29-12:2.  What amazing things have you seen done as a result of faith?  What does the imagery of being surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses mean to you? What does it mean to you to "run with perseverance the race that is set before us"?

The Gospel is Luke 12:49-56.  Jesus warns that he is not bringing peace.  These words can be upsetting to read/hear and many Christians gloss over them.  What does it mean to you that Jesus is talking about how he will bring division to households?  Who are you at odds against?  Who helps us to interpret the present time?  Are some of those people the false prophets that Jeremiah warns about?

As always, please feel free to response to me or to everyone with your thoughts about these text.  You can also attend the Wednesday evening bible study at the parsonage in order to deepen your understanding of these text.

Blessings on your week!
